Is Kerid Crater Worth It?
Is Kerid Crater worth it? Yes as a 20- to 45-minute Golden Circle stop for 700 ISK, not as a trip on its own. When to skip it, and the lagoon days.
Kerið is worth it as a stop on the Golden Circle: 700 ISK, 20 to 45 minutes, and it sits on Road 35 between Selfoss and Geysir, so it costs the day little. It is not worth a trip on its own from Reykjavik, 68.7 km each way, for a crater you can walk round in half an hour. If you want the day to end in warm water, Nicetravel’s Reykjavik: Golden Circle, Kerid Crater, & Blue Lagoon Tour adds about two hours at the Blue Lagoon, entry included, from $251 a person (checked November 2026).
The calendar above is Nicetravel’s Blue Lagoon day, with 6,164 reviews (checked November 2026).
What you get for the stop
A crater about 270 m long, 170 m wide and 55 m deep by its owners’ figures, with slopes of red volcanic rock and green moss and a shallow lake at the bottom. From the rim by the car park you see the whole of it at once; a path of about 0.8 km goes round the rim, and wooden stairs go down to the water. Of the usual Golden Circle stops it is the volcanic crater, beside the rift valley at Þingvellir, the geysers at Geysir and the waterfall at Gullfoss.

When it is worth less
- On a grey, wet day. The colours of the rock and the water are what you come for, and they are strongest in sunshine.
- On a tour that gives 20 minutes, if you wanted the walk. Twenty minutes covers the rim by the car park and a photograph; for the walk round and the stairs, choose a tour with about 45 minutes. Golden Circle tours with Kerið lists the minutes.
- In ice. The view from the rim stays; the stairs are best left alone. Kerið in winter has the detail.
If none of these applies, the stop is cheap for what it shows: 700 ISK, paid at the entrance, with free parking; many tours include the fee. The entrance fee lists which.

Kerið with a lagoon
The longer days pair the Golden Circle and Kerið with a geothermal lagoon and return to Reykjavik in the evening. Some tours pair Kerið with the Secret Lagoon instead.
